Man United player ratings vs Tottenham: Fernandes gets 4/10 but Amorim must axe 2/10 ace after 1-0 heartbreak

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final at the Estadio de San Mames in Bilbao.

Spurs struck the decisive blow in the 42nd minute when Brennan Johnson capitalised on a moment of defensive uncertainty.

Luke Shaw and Andre Onana both hesitated when decisiveness was needed, and that brief lapse shattered the dreams of the United faithful.

United pushed hard for an equaliser, with Shaw, Casemiro, and Alejandro Garnacho all threatening, but none could find the cutting edge.

In the second half, Ange Postecoglou channelled his inner Jose Mourinho, shutting down the game with a resolute defensive set-up to seal a famous European triumph for Spurs.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 2/10

Onana hesitated when United needed him to command his box, allowing Johnson to score a scrappy match-winner. He must be sold in the summer.

Leny Yoro – 6/10

Yoro showed composure on the ball and carried it forward with intent but drew ire from his teammates for a frustrated shot that blazed over the bar in injury time.

Harry Maguire – 6/10

Forced to be an emergency striker again for the last few minutes and was involved more than Hojlund and Zirkzee.

Postecoglou was alert to throw on an extra centre-back to neutralise the late threat.

Luke Shaw – 4/10

Shaw allowed Brennan Johnson to sneak in behind and punish United. Ruben Amorim should not have started him after spending the majority of the campaign on the injury table.

Patrick Dorgu – 5/10

Dorgu was tenacious with his tackles but added no firepower to the attack.

Noussair Mazraoui – 6/10

Offered limited support going forward, but stood tall when it mattered defensively. The Moroccan international made a vital last-ditch tackle to deny Son Heung-min a golden chance to seal the game.

Casemiro – 6/10

Largely untroubled defensively and tried to drag United back into the contest, as he so often has in Europe, but lacked support from his teammates.

Bruno Fernandes – 4/10

After an inspiring campaign, the captain picked the worst possible stage to go missing. It was his giveaway that sparked the move leading to Spurs’ only goal.

A night when leadership and creativity were needed — neither arrived.

Mason Mount – 3/10

Mount offered little spark or drive, and his inclusion ahead of Garnacho left many puzzled. To make matters worse, the manager stuck with him for 70 long, uninspired minutes.

Amad Diallo – 5/10

Diallo caused a lot of problems for Destiny Udogie in the first half but he faded away and failed to make the decisive impact.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4/10

Hojlund was barely involved in the first half and got a lucky opportunity to equalise after the interval, only to see his shot cleared off the line by Van de Ven.

Substitutions

Alejandro Garnacho – 5/10

Garnacho immediately tested Vicario with a sharp effort after entering the fray but failed to unlock Spurs’ stubborn backline.

Joshua Zirkzee – 5/10

His miraculous recovery from an injury could not help United get back into the game.

Diogo Dalot – 6/10

Floated a good cross for Luke Shaw late in the game.

Kobbie Mainoo – NA

Too late to rate.
