Ruben Amorim has offered to walk away as Manchester United boss ‘without compensation’ if the club feel he is no longer the man to lead them forward.
Defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday night ensures United will end the 2024-25 without a trophy with no European football on offer next season.
Slumped in 16th place in the Premier League, a woeful campaign will draw to an end with a whimper at home to Aston Villa on the final day of the season on Sunday.
It confirms the club’s worst season in 51 years.
Amorim was brought to Old Trafford to replace Erik ten Hag in November but the Portuguese coach has managed just six wins in 26 league games.

United will feel the cost of failing to secure Champions League football with key summer transfer targets now perhaps out of reach.
The former Sporting Lisbon boss has stood by his methods and tactics since arriving at the club, insisting he will not change despite the lack of improvement in the club’s fortunes during his first six months in charge.

While committed to the cause, Amorim has promised to leave his post if the club’s decision-makers decide to cut their losses.
‘In this moment, I am not going to be here defending myself. I cannot do it, it is really hard for me,’ Amorim said in his post-match press conference.
‘I have nothing to show to the fans to say I am going to improve.
‘So in this moment it is a little bit of faith. Let’s see. I am always open, if the board and the fans feel I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation.
‘But I will not quit. I am really confident on my job. As you can see I will not change nothing in the way I do things.’

United have now lost four times to Tottenham this season, twice in the league, in the League Cup and on Wednesday on the biggest stage.
While feeling his side were the better of the two in Bilbao, he admitted a lack of creativity was their downfall.
‘What I can say is it was clear we were the better team but we managed not to score again and that is really hard to win football matches. But the guys tried everything to win the game. In the future, we will have time to assess everything.
‘There were some times that we didn’t create situations, now is not that time, we are creating situations. If you look at the opportunities we have, it’s different players. It’s not the problem of one guy. We are not scoring goals, the goalkeeper did a great job.
‘Of course, I am confident in my players, it’s my job to improve my players and to arrive in January to make a lot of changes was not possible because of all the problems we have to deal with. And then I had to assess the team. The problem it not just one player.’
