Son Heung-min celebrated the Tottenham Hotspur Europa League win by proclaiming himself a club ‘legend’.
The forward had to settle for a spot on the bench in Bilbao against Manchester United but came on for a cameo to help see the game out. It was a narrow 1-0 victory for Ange Postecoglou’s side, who lifted a historic piece of silverware for the football club.
Speaking to TNT Sports after his teammates lifted the trophy, Son was asked if he might finally accept that he is a club legend. He replied: “It’s 17 years we haven’t done it. Today is the day. Probably, I will say today I’m a legend. Let’s celebrate! I feel amazing, I always dream for it and today it comes really true. I’m so, so happy. The happiest man in the world.
Son Heung-min ‘proud to be Korean’ as he lifts Europa League trophy
“When you look at the whole season it’s a tough time. As players, we always stuck together with injuries and young players, they always step up. I always give them good advice and want to talk positive. I have such an amazing group of players.
“I felt the pressure! I want this so badly. The last seven days I was dreaming about this game every single day and it finally happened. I can enjoy. We’ll probably miss the flight! Today is the day we can celebrate, we won, let’s make it a day we never forget. Maybe we miss the flight... Maybe we can call it off [Brighton match this weekend]. I’m joking, it’ll be great to bring the trophy back to our fans.
“I’m very proud to be Korean and to win a trophy. I want to say thank you to the Korean fans. It was 4 am they were supporting me!”
Son has now made 454 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur, scoring 173 goals and picking up 101 assists. The South Korea international has been with the club since 2015 and finished as a runner up in the Champions League in 2019 and the Carabao Cup in 2021.
Liverpool star’s social media post goes viral after Spurs win
As Son left his interview with TNT Sports, fellow club legend Gareth Bale heaped praise on the winger. The former Real Madrid man said: “He’s literally the most likeable character in football, always a smile. He’s feisty in the changing room though, he does have that other side to him though which is great to see. A likeable character and amazing servant to Tottenham football club. He deserves this.”
Meanwhile, it wasn’t just current and former Tottenham Hotspur stars who shared messages of congratulations after the Europa League triumph. Liverpool mega star Mohamed Salah was watching the game and went straight to social media platform X to share his thoughts at full time.
Alluding to the interview where Postecoglou promised that he would win a trophy in his second season, Salah wrote: “He did say he’d win in his second season. Congratulations!”
