Tottenham’s Europa League hero Brennan Johnson has urged the club’s board to back Ange Postecoglou after leading the club to their first trophy in 17 years.
Spurs ended their long wait for silverware in Bilbao on Wednesday night with Johnson’s goal late in the first-half enough to seal the 1-0 victory at San Mames.
Postecoglou has found himself under mounting pressure during what has been a disastrous Premier League campaign with his side sat in 17th place with one game of the season remaining.
The former Celtic boss struck a defiant note on Tuesday, insisting he is still building something special in north London despite uncertainty surrounding his long-term future.
Earlier in the campaign, Postecoglou (correctly) declared he always wins something in his second season.

In winning Tottenham’s first trophy since 2009, Postecoglou may have saved his job with Johnson describing Wednesday’s success as the perfect ‘mic drop’ to hit back at the manager’s critics.
‘He’s done his job,’ Johnson told TNT Sports after Tottenham’s victory.

‘He said he wins in his second year and he has. If there was ever time for a mic drop, it’s now so I will be looking forward to his interview.
‘I can’t thank the manager enough for how much trust he has had in us because some of the performances this season haven’t been good enough. Especially in the Europa League he has this really good way of getting everyone up for it and today it showed.’
While winning the trophy may not be enough to keep him in the job, Postecoglou is eager continue to the work he has started.
‘I don’t feel like I’ve completed the job yet, we’re still building,’ Postecoglou said. ‘The moment I took the job, I wanted to win something. We’ve done that. It’s the toughest thing I’ve ever done.

‘The moment I accepted the role [as manager] I had one thing in my head, and that was to win something.
‘More than anything else I had that in my head, and we’ve done that now so I want to build on it. I am super proud – this is one for the true believers. I’m still taking it all in. I know what it means for this football club. The longer it goes, the harder it is to break that cycle.
‘I could sense the nerves in everyone at the club and until you take that monkey off your back, you never understand what it feels like.
‘We have a young group and I hope by tasting this, the players feel different about themselves and what it means to them is unbelievable.
‘I’ve always felt knockout football is different to league football and when you’re in that situation it comes down to good organisation, having a real gameplan and moments and you can minimise moments by having a strong foundation.’
