“I am still the guy, I will not go away”–Amorim remains defiant despite Europa League final loss to Tottenham

Manchester United gaffer Ruben Amorim cut a defiant figure in San Mames despite the 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils were underwhelming, with a place in the UEFA Champions League on the line and a chance to salvage something from a shameful 2024/25 campaign.

Man Utd were ultimately undone by their inability to finish chances and a calamitous moment involving Luke Shaw and Andre Onana.

The loss capped off a turbulent first seven months in charge of Man Utd for Amorim. His Premier League record of 14 losses, six draws, and only six wins leaves plenty to be desired.

However, Amorim remains bullish (the [BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/live/cz9yney9391t?post=asset%3A2ad10360-b60d-4507-8fc8-fa3c1dafa8a9#post) via TNT Sports): “I am confident I am still the guy, more than in the beginning… I guarantee you I will not quit, and I will not go away. I am really confident.

“I know the club, I know what it means to coach this club, and I understand what this team needs. If they say it is better to change, I will leave the next day.”

Since arriving, [Amorim](https://footballtoday.com/2025/05/17/concerning-stats-that-shows-why-man-utd-must-part-ways-with-amorim-this-summer/) has failed to impose a clear identity. Results have dipped, key players have regressed, and man-management missteps have begun to pile up.

Amorim did not need to throw Alejandro Garnacho under the bus the way he did when asked if he should have started the Argentine in the final.

The former Sporting CP manager could have deflected, but chose to mention his miss in the end.

His relationship with Marcus Rashford has strained, and the England international wants to leave his boyhood club this summer.

Tactical stubbornness and a failure to adapt are becoming trademarks for the wrong reasons.

The board may still back Amorim with signings like Matheus Cunha and Viktor Gyokeres, but patience is thinning.

United do not look like a team building something after seven months under the Portuguese tactician.
