Manchester United have lost the Europa League final - with a number of disappointing performances across the pitch
Despite dominating the ball and having 16 shots with six on target, Ruben Amorim’s side could not break down Spurs - who opted to sit deep and soak up the pressure after going ahead. It was United’s first defeat in Europe this season and dramatically alters this plans for this summer.
With no European football next season, the Red Devils will only be able to finance one or two arrivals. They will be able to sign more players if they can agree some player sales. The likes of Antony, Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho are all set to moved which could help raise funds.
Man Utd must sell Casemiro after 4/10 Europa League final display
Given their financial situation, one player who United must move on this summer is Casemiro. The Brazilian was given a 4/10 rating for his performance against Spurs after being “ran ragged” at times. Tottenham did break on occasion but could not find the right pass to add to their one-goal tally but each time Casemiro struggled to get back sufficiently. TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist insisted the midfielder “did not have the legs”.
Casemiro was smothered by the Spurs midfield in the first half as he failed to make an impact on the game. The midfielder has had a tough season but his dip in form started last campaign. The ex-Real Madrid star enjoyed an impressive first 12 months at United but he has yet to replicate those performances.
He has just one year left on his deal at Old Trafford, with an option of a further 12 months in the club’s favour. He is on a mammoth wage and with United looking for bargains in the market, selling him and getting his salary off the books will be a major piece of business this summer. Selling him in the upcoming window is also likely to be the club’s last chance to get a decent fee.
Where could Casemiro go?
Casemiro was linked with the Saudi Pro League in January and clubs in the Gulf state appear to be the only teams who could afford his transfer fee along with his wages.
"It's too soon to talk about next season, but of course I have another year of contract and then an option," Casemiro said earlier in the campaign.
He had been left out of the starting XI by Ruben Amorim earlier in the season before fighting his way back in to earn a regular spot.
He added when addressing his future earlier in the season: "I'm here, I'm available, with total happiness, and I'm ready for the coach and the club. As everyone knows, I'm a big character for the club."
