Just in: Simon Stone shares big Ruben Amorim sack update after Man Utd lose Europa League final

Ruben Amorim won't lose his job at Manchester United, according to BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone - with the club's position 'not changing' despite defeat in the Europa League final.

A loss to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao saw United's season come to a crashing end, with no trophies, no European football next season and a bottom-half finish in the top-flight for the first time since the 1980's. Just 24 points from his 26 games in the Premier League is nowhere near good enough for the Red Devils, and that will impact them next season with less money to bring in new signings for a rebuild.

It's seen Amorim's tenure come under pressure, after failing to improve their fortunes on domestic soil, with fans seething after the loss to Tottenham in northern Spain - but Stone has stated that the fans, board and club in general remain behind him in terms of backing him.

New owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, stated earlier in the season that he anticipates Amorim will be at the club for a 'long time' - and that viewpoint doesn't appear to have changed despite a dismal, dreary end to the campaign. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), the BBC journalist said:

"No change to previous @ManUtd position following last night's press conference. Club and ownership still behind Ruben Amorim and feel the fans are too."

United won't have European football for the first time in over a decade, and just the second time since the mid 1980's - and the revenue streams that are lost as a result of their loss on Wednesday will impact the club in the coming years.

But the Portuguese gaffer will likely get the summer to turn their fortunes around, and no midweek games to contend with next season will have its benefits in terms of injuries and squad resting. There are silver linings from the loss, and that means that Amorim will be hoping that he can have more time to turn around the poor form that he inherited from Erik ten Hag - but with less money to spend, he will be up against it next season.
