Romelle Donovan has ended his season with a trophy after lighting up the Professional Development League cup final for Brentford.

The Birmingham City starlet has spent the second half of the season on loan at Brentford’s B team after returning to Blues from a fruitless spell at League One side Burton Albion.

Donovan has occasionally turned out for the Bees’ under-21 side and starred as they defeated Bournemouth 3-2 in the National Final at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday evening.

With the scores level at 1-1, Donovan marauded through the centre of the pitch before lashing the ball into the roof of the net from 20 yards to put Brentford ahead.

Donovan reflected: “We’ve been working all season for this so I feel relieved that we’ve actually got a trophy. I just picked it up on the half turn, drove and got to the edge of the box and thought, ‘let me just hit this’, and the rest was history.”

Donovan has scored eight times and made a big impression during his loan spell with Brentford ahead of what promises to be an interesting summer.

While neither club reported an option-to-buy clause in the loan agreement, the move was designed to give Brentford – who are long-term admirers of Donovan – a closer look at the 18-year-old before deciding whether to splash out on him.

Blues were happy to offload Donovan after Chris Davies decided against integrating him into the first team midway through last season when he returned from Burton.

Davies made it clear that Donovan wouldn’t feature in his plans, saying: “He’s not really in my thinking. He’s a young player that needs to keep developing at his own pace and we can support him with that, but I wouldn’t say he’s part of the first team picture.”

If Donovan doesn’t end up at Brentford this summer, it’s hard to see Davies’ stance changing now that Blues have been promoted to the Championship.
