Newcastle United suffer double snub ahead of Everton clash as Liverpool get special treatment

Newcastle United’s bid for Champions League qualification has gone down to the final day of the Premier League season.

Eddie Howe’s side host Everton at St James’ Park on Sunday needing a win to guarantee Champions League qualification. Anything less will force them to rely on favours from other teams.

Heading into the final day, Manchester City sit third in the Premier League table on 68 points, Newcastle are fourth on goal difference with fifth place Chelsea and sixth place Aston Villa also on 66 points and Nottingham Forest are seventh on 65 points.

Newcastle United snubbed by Sky Sports and TNT Sports

With that in mind, it may come as little surprise to hear Forest versus Chelsea has been selected by Sky Sports with the two teams aiming to do damage to each other.

A win for Chelsea would seal Champions League qualification while Forest can qualify if they win and Newcastle or Aston Villa drop points. A draw would mean both clubs risk missing out.

Meanwhile, TNT Sports have chosen Man United against Aston Villa as their pick, with Unai Emery’s side needing to better Newcastle or Chelsea’s result to qualify. A win and a Man City defeat away to Fulham would also be enough.

Given what’s at stake, there are few complaints over the above matches being selected, however the decision to broadcast Liverpool versus Crystal Palace has attracted criticism.

The clash at Anfield is essentially a dead rubber - Liverpool were confirmed as Premier League champions last month while FA Cup winners Palace can realistically finish no higher than ninth due to their goal difference.

Essentially, the Sky cameras are there to capture what happens after the 90 minutes when Arne Slot’s side lift the Premier League title.
