Manchester United were beaten by**Tottenham** in the**UEFA Europa League** final, ending the club's last chance of winning a title this season, marked by the worst**Premier League** campaign in their history. After the match on Wednesday (21), coach**Rúben****Amorim**, under heavy pressure, commented on the defeat in the English derby and briefly touched on his future at the helm of the team.
"If the board and the fans think I'm not the right person, I'll leave the club the next day," said Amorim."But I won't resign again. I'm confident in my work. As you can see, I won't change anything about the way I do things.
"Right now, I'm not here to defend myself. It's not my style. I have nothing to show the fans. Right now I need a bit of faith."
Ruben Amorim was one of the most criticized by Manchester United fans after the 1-0 defeat to Spurs in Bilbao in the continental final. The captain has been with the Red Devils since November last year, but has failed to perform well with the English club.
- Shaw: Amorim is 100% the right man
Also after the match at San Mamés , Luke Shaw, disheartened by his team's negative result, said that Amorim is the right man - and that all the players need to*"ask ourselves if we're good enough to be here"*.
"We're all devastated, to be honest, that's not how we saw the result," said Shaw."But it's not just tonight, the whole season has been nowhere near good enough. I think we all have to ask ourselves if we're good enough to be here.
"For a team like Manchester (United), in the season we've had, that's not acceptable. We know that, we all know that, I know that. It's not where Manchester (United) should be."
Asked about Amorim's credentials, Shaw said:"I can say 100% now that he's the right man. The results have not been good at all. I've been here a long time and I've been under different managers.
"Ruben, for me, I speak for myself and I can speak for all the players, he is 100% the right manager to take us back to where this club should be.
"It's going to be a very difficult process, we as players have let a lot of people down, including Ruben. I'll say it again, we were nowhere near good enough all season."
Shaw - who was involved in the collective failure of United's defense that preceded Brennan Johnson 's shot over the line for Tottenham's winning goal in the first half - apologized to the fans, admitting that the club is now at*"rock bottom"*.
"A lot needs to change, that's obvious," said Shaw."That's why I say Ruben is 100% the right person. He knows what needs to be done at this club, and I believe he will do everything he can to make that change and get Manchester back on top.
"I think the fans? I understand that right now they're going to be angry. And rightly so. But all I can say is thank you very much for your support.
"Wherever we go, including the position we occupy in the table, the results we've had this year, they've always been there.
"All I can say is, firstly, thank you very much for your support and, secondly, we're very sorry for what they've had to go through this season. It was nowhere near good enough and I can only apologize for that.
"We have to look at the positives and the only positive is that we can only go up from here. We're at rock bottom now, we have to find a way to recover and get back to where this club deserves to be."
