Ruben Amorim’s future is uncertain following Manchester United’s loss to Tottenham on Wednesday night.
It leaves the Red Devils without European football next season, and as they are set to finish 16th in the Premier League, arguably their worst season in recent history.
Amorim will be under pressure heading into next year, as he aims to rebuild his squad and turn United’s fortunes around, but will he stick around following this year, or will he be on his way out?
Ornstein says Amorim “will continue”
There was far less pressure on Amorim than Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, who could still leave the club despite the fact that they won the trophy. But after his comments on Wednesday night, speculation has emerged around the future of the Portuguese boss this summer.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein spoke on Sky Sports News after the game, assessing what he thinks will happen to Amorim following their defeat to Spurs.
He said: “This is a crushing blow for them and Ruben Amorim. If you thought it couldn't get worse at Manchester United, well, it just has tonight. Big questions need to be answered from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers and the hierarchy at the club.
“This is a massive job for Amorim to turn around. I think he will continue. If they thought their summer was going to be hard, then it just got a whole lot harder in terms of recruitment and in terms of turning this struggling juggernaut around."
If Amorim does stay, he will need to use his persuasive powers to draw top players to Old Trafford without the lure of Champions League football, and without the realistic prospect of a high-up Premier League finish next season, which will be a major challenge.
Who could take over from Amorim?
Following the defeat in Bilbao, and Amorim’s comments regarding his future at Old Trafford, speculation has arisen over who could take over, should United decide that Amorim is not the right man for the job.
Former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri could be an option. He is currently without a job after leaving the Italian side in 2024, and has been linked to jobs such as Inter and Napoli.
After Allegri, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is another contender. He has shown real progress with the Eagles, not forgetting to mention that he managed to bring the club their first ever major trophy by winning the FA Cup.
Former Spurs and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is another possible option, despite the fact that he is currently working as the USA National Team manager ahead of the World Cup in 2026.
Another possible candidate is Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, who previously worked at United as a coach. His side will be in the Championship next season following their relegation from the Premier League. Other names currently without a role at the moment are Gareth Southgate and Zinedine Zidane.
