Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United has proven to be a disaster as the Premier League giants continue to suffer one blow after another. The latest setback came in the Europa League final, where the Red Devils lost 1-0 to Tottenham .
Languishing at 16th in the Premier League table with just one more game to go, United needed to win the Europa League to return to the Champions League next season and salvage their poor 2024-25 campaign, but Amorim’s team failed in the mission and how.

Man United had 16 shots, 6 on target and 74% ball possession, but their game lacked teeth and the only goal of the match came from Spurs footballer Brennan Johnson as the London club ended their 17-year trophy drought.
Man United suffer trophyless season under Amorim
As a result, Amorim’s United will end their season trophyless. At least, last season, they won the FA Cup under Erik ten Hag, who was sacked to bring in the Portuguese tactician.
Amorim, 40, joined United in November last year after helping Sporting CP win the Portuguese top division, Primeira Liga, twice, in 2020–21 and 2023–24. At the time of his appointment, Man United were 14th in the English Premier League with just three wins in their opening nine games.
What has happened since then? United has slid two spots down to 16th and in 26 games in the Premier League under the former midfielder, they have suffered 16 defeats, six alone in December. With Amorim at the helm, Manchester United have only won six matches and drawn six in the EPL.
🚨 Bruno Fernandes: “I do think Rúben Amorim is the right man for us”.

The Portuguese tactician has collected 24 points out of 26 Premier League games so far, which comes down to 0.96 points per match. This is United’s worst-ever Premier League finish.
Another stat that exposes United’s frailties under Amorim is that they haven’t beaten a non-relegated club since January, as the club has struggled to adapt to his 3-4-2-1 system.

Amorm says ‘he will not quit’
He has also fallen out with players like Marcus Rashford and Antony, who have made quite an impact at Aston Villa and Real Betis, respectively, since leaving on loan.
United now face a tough decision amid all the cost-cutting at the club. They had to pay $10 million to Ten Hag as compensation for his sacking and may not want to make the same financial sacrifice again.
Amorim has said that if the club and fans want to leave him, he would do so without compensation . “In this moment, I am not going to be here defending myself, it is not my style,” Amorim told reporters after the defeat in the Europa League final. “I cannot do it, it is really hard for me…
“In this moment, it is a little bit of faith. Let’s see. I’m always open, if the board and the fans feel that I am not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation.”

Amorim, however, also added that he is the right person to lift United out of this abyss. “I know it’s going to be tough, I know we lost to an English team, I know the pressure of the fans is going to be really short in the next season. But I guarantee you I will not quit, I will not go away, so I am really confident.”
So if Amorim decides to stick around, United will have a big decision to make. And if the board goes by what has happened this season, it’s difficult to see how they wouldn’t decide to move on from him.
