It’s been quite a season at Newcastle United, with our rally towards the top-five after a tough start and unforgettable win at Wembley seeing Eddie Howe and the team go down in history.
Whether we beat Everton on Sunday or not to claim a place in next season’s Champions League, we won’t forget 2024/25 for as long as we live.
There has been so many standout performers and Toon legend has picked out two in his final Premier League team of the season, which also features a certain target we’re hoping to see arrive on Tyneside this summer!
Alan Shearer has selected Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali in his 2024/25 Premier League Team of the Season alongside summer target Bryan Mbeumo.
Only Liverpool’s Mo Salah (28) can better Isak’s tally of 23 goals this season, while Tonali’s place is fully deserved for his incredible transformation into one of Europe’s top No 6s over the second half of the campaign.
Shearer describes Isak as “one of the best No 9s in Europe” and discusses Tonali’s transformative impact on the team, hailing his all-action displays in that holding role.
Explaining both of his Newcastle picks and Mbeumo’s inclusion, Shearer wrote this for the Premier League’s official site:
Sandro Tonali (Newcastle) – “He has proved why he is so important to Newcastle, and why he is adored by the supporters. Tonali has stood out in a midfield packed with talent, and moving into more of a holding role has really transformed the Magpies’ season. His flexibility edges out Wolves’ Matheus Cunha.”
Alexander Isak (Newcastle) – “One of the best No 9s in Europe. He’s had a fantastic season, but he’s just unlucky that Salah has been so phenomenal, as 23 goals would be enough to win him the Golden Boot in some seasons. Chris Wood and Yoane Wissa have also impressed throughout the campaign, so they deserve a mention here too.”
Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford) – “Has taken his game to new heights this season, registering 19 Premier League goals and seven assists. Even when Brentford haven’t been at their absolute best, he has delivered the goods win in, week out. An honourable mention for Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze.”
Shearer’s TOTS: Alisson – Munoz, Saliba, Van Dijk, Kerkez – Rice, Mac Allister, Tonali – Salah, Isak, Mbeumo.

In the comments on X, supporters up and down the country have put forward a number of players they feel should’ve made the side.
Popular mentions include Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels, Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo, Man Utd’s Bruno Fernandes and Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly.
You can’t please them all, mind, as there are so many contenders to fill the 11 slots, not to mention the manager of the season award that could’ve gone to any of Arne Slot, Nuno Esparito Santo or Eddie Howe!
