Inside the King Power Stadium: Youngster exits, teen makes Euros impact, questions asked

After the emotion of Jamie Vardy’s Leicester City farewell on Sunday, the following few days could have been dull by comparison with his brilliant King Power celebration.

But with the emergence of fresh charges over alleged breaches of profit and sustainability rules, and with continued speculation over the future of Ruud van Nistelrooy and his potential successor as manager, it has been anything but.

And they are only the big headlines. There has plenty more happening too, so we have taken a look at some of the other news from around the club as the Foxes head towards their final game of a troubled season...

Young left-back says goodbye

Vardy won’t be the only player to leave City this summer, and with the academy and development squad seasons now over, out-of-contract youngsters will also be saying their goodbyes.

Deniche Hill is the first to come forward. The 21-year-old Bermuda international, who played as a left-back or on the left wing, posted to Instagram to say he was leaving City after three years.

He played nine times for City’s under-21s this term. His 20-minute substitute outing in the final fixture of the regular Premier League 2 season, against Nottingham Forest last month, was his first appearance since November.

Posting a picture with City youth coaches Adi Yussuf and Cleveland Taylor, Hill wrote on social media: “Joining Leicester as an 18-year-old boy from Bermuda with no experience in professional football whatsoever and leaving as a 21-year-old man with memories and experiences I will cherish for life.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me, especially these two, over the years and wishing all my team-mates and staff members nothing but success and blessings. Excited for my new chapter that God has in store for me.”

Fans surveyed on running of club

The Premier League charges news has emerged in a week when City’s largest supporters’ group, the Foxes Trust, have issued a survey on the state of the club.

With the banners and chants seen and heard inside the King Power Stadium throughout the season, overwhelmingly positive responses would not have been expected anyway, but this week’s news could lead to more negative feedback.

There are 50 multiple-choice questions on City, with many focusing on the hierarchy and their running of the club. There are questions on day-to-day organisation, strategy, managerial appointments, financial management, transfers, contracts, the academy and communication with supporters.

There are also questions about the matchday experience, ticketing, the stadium atmosphere and facilities, as well as on fans’ connection with the club.

As of a couple of days ago, they were approaching 2,000 responses. The more respondents it gets, the more accurate it should be at showing fan sentiment. You can fill it in here.

Page starts Euros opener

While City’s joint-development squad player of the season winners Jake Evans and Jeremy Monga are playing for the first team, their academy player of the season Louis Page is out in Albania starting for England at the under-17 Euros.

Page was in the 11 for the Young Lions’ first group game on Tuesday, a 1-1 draw with Belgium. The central midfielder looked confident to receive the ball, athletic in his ability to get around the pitch and played a nice pass in the build-up to England’s goal.

England play the second of their three group matches against Italy on Friday evening, and then face the Czech Republic next Monday. The top two from the group go through to the semi-finals.

Marcal suffers play-off pain

Wanya Marcal will not get to taste promotion success before he returns to City after his loan side De Graafschap were knocked out in the first round of the play-offs in Dutch second division.

After a goalless draw in the first leg with Dordrecht, De Graafschap had a great chance to take the lead in the second leg when winger Marcal was tripped in the box and a penalty was awarded.

However, the spot-kick was saved and Dordrecht then scored two second-half goals to claim a 2-0 aggregate win and progress to the play-off semi-finals.

Marcal, who has one year left on his City contract, will be back at the club for pre-season this summer.

Moment missed

With the attention on Vardy’s 500th City match, it may have gone under the radar that the club’s former manager Claudio Ranieri was getting his own emotional send-off.

In what was his final home game as Roma boss, and his 500th match as a manager in Serie A, Ranieri was treated to an outpouring of love from fans inside the Stadio Olimpico, with tifos and chants.

His team gave him a 3-1 victory too, which means they could still qualify for the Champions League. They need to beat mid-table Torino in their final game and hope Juventus fail to defeat relegation-threatened Venezia in order to leapfrog them into fourth.

Roma are guaranteed at least a place in the Europa Conference League, which is impressive given Ranieri took over in November with the club in 12th.

Who has impressed recently?

It is satisfying to audibly hear the excitement City fans have when Jeremy Monga gets on the ball.

His growing confidence in the senior game means he’s willing to take on his man more often, and the 15-year-old’s quick feet earned plenty of gasps from the King Power crowd during the win over Ipswich.

He’s bound to get another 20 or 30 minutes on the pitch at Bournemouth at least. Let’s hope he can get his first goal involvement.

Who has a point to prove?

With Vardy on holiday after wrapping up his City career, there will be an opportunity for someone else to lead the line at Bournemouth.

Patson Daka could get a rare chance to start and show what he can do when afforded more time on the pitch, and against a club who were interested in signing him a couple of years ago.

The Zambian’s future is one to watch ahead of this summer.

Next up...

It’s a final-day trip to the south coast as City take on the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday (4pm kick-off).

A run of two wins in 12 matches means Andoni Iraola’s side are now out of European contention, but there’s a fair amount of prize money on the line for them. They’re currently 11th but can finish anywhere between 12th and ninth, a difference of around £9m.

For City, who are above Bournemouth in the six-game form table, they need a point to ensure they stay 18th and bank an extra £3m.

If they win, they will reach 28 points, going level with their final tally from their 2001/02 season, which currently stands as their worst Premier League campaign.
