Liverpool are set to find themselves in a strange situation next season, with three goalkeepers in the squad who are all deserving of a starting berth.
Obviously, Alisson is Arne Slot’s number one, but seeing as though Caoimhin Kelleher and Giorgi Mamardashvili can’t both be used as his back-up, one has to go.
The transfer of Mamardashvili last season was a strange one, with the Georgia international getting sent straight back to Valencia on loan.

However, ahead of his imminent return to Anfield, Mamardashvili has seemingly confirmed where he will be playing next season.
Giorgi Mamardashvili will stay at Liverpool next season
In an interview with Geo Team as summarised by Fabrizio Romano via X, Mamardashvili has confirmed that he won’t be seeking another loan deal next season.
“I’m not considering another loan move. I will spend next season at Liverpool,” he said.
“I’ll go to Liverpool and give my all, just like I did at Valencia. I’ll work hard every single day, training with Alisson will help me.”

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Not only does this outline that the Georgia international sees himself as Liverpool’s number two, but it also begs the question of what is going to happen to Kelleher.
The Irishman has filled in for Alisson on numerous occasions this term, and although he wasn’t going to be Liverpool’s first choice for some time, he likely expected his career to be headed that way one day.
At the moment, however, that is evidently not the case, with fans being left with more questions than answers.
Comparing Giorgi Mamardashvili’s and Caoimhin Kelleher’s stats and performances this season
As mentioned, the ‘keeper has been Alisson’s right-hand man for as long as many can remember, with Kelleher a key part in Liverpool’s title win this term.
However, with Mamardashvili set to return to Liverpool, the question everyone will be wanting an answer to is whether the Georgian is a better ‘keeper than the man he’ll likely be replacing.
Player Games Goals Conceded Clean sheets
Caoimhin Kelleher 20 20 9
Giorgi Mamardashvili 33 47 8
The 2024-25 seasons of Caoimhin Kelleher and Girogi Mamardashvili in numbers.
Statistically, although Mamardashvili has played more games, the Georgian still looks to be the worse goalkeeper.
He’s had fewer clean sheets than Kelleher across the campaign and has only played in La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
By comparison, Kelleher has not only been used 10 times in the Premier League, but he’s also played four games in the Champions League when Alisson was out injured.
Only time will tell if the move for Mamardashvili was worthwhile or not but on the face of things, it’s a move that doesn’t seem to make all that much sense.
