Manchester United are in a desperate situation after losing Wednesday's Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Reds will have no European football at Old Trafford for the first time in over a decade, with their defeat to Spurs seeing them miss out on a lucrative place in next season's Champions League. United's lowly Premier League position of 16th also means that there will be no place for them in the Europa League or Conference League either.
It represents a new low under head coach Ruben Amorim, who has overseen a disastrous run of results since replacing Erik ten Hag in November last year. The former Sporting boss has even offered to leave United after just six months if the club see fit.
However, it is widely accepted at M16 that Amorim must be given at least the summer transfer window and a full pre-season to give him the best opportunity to succeed. Many fans recognise that he has walked into a very difficult situation mid-season with a squad which is ill-suited to his system.
Nevertheless, questions have been asked over whether he is the right man for such a huge job. Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “Massimiliano Allegri is the new favourite to become the next permanent Man United manager after the Red Devils and Ruben Amorim fell to defeat in the Europa League Final on Wednesday. Kieran McKenna follows at 9/2, with Jose Mourinho, who was previously the 4/1 favourite, now 6/1 to return to Old Trafford alongside FA Cup-winning Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.
“Looking at who else could replace Amorim, odds on Mauricio Pochettino to become the next Man United boss have been slashed to 7/1 from 12/1, with Zinedine Zidane a 16/1 contender to take the job. Elsewhere, Brendan Rodgers remains 18/1 to return to the Premier League, while Roy Keane, 50/1, joins Jurgen Klopp, 80/1 and Gary Neville, 100/1, as a huge longshot to be the next manager in the Old Trafford dugout.”
