Ruben Amorim’s position is now under major scrutiny, with United’s failure to secure Champions League football dealing a serious blow to their finances and long-term planning.

Fans endured a painful night, watching the Red Devils lose 1-0 to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham side.

It’s a loss that will have huge implications and domino effect on the short and long-term future.

Especially considering the lack of Champions League football.

Missing out on Europe’s premier competition is expected to limit United’s appeal to elite players this summer, and raise doubts over the trajectory of the project under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.

But there may still be a way for United to open the door to enormous summer spending – without breaching financial regulations.

A breakdown into how Manchester United could spend over £400m this summer

As explained by AliceTalksFooty on X, Manchester United could technically spend over £400 million this summer if they were to sell Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford for a combined £95m.

Because both are academy products, their departures would count as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), providing a crucial financial boost.

Why does that matter? Under PSR, transfer costs are amortised over the length of a player’s contract.

For example, a £60m signing on a five-year deal would only register as £12m per season on the books.

That means, theoretically, if United earned £95m in pure profit from Garnacho and Rashford, they could then spend between £300m-£475m without violating PSR rules.

That’s provided contracts and wages are structured carefully.

The same logic applies more broadly.

In the same breakdown, Alice listed potential sales that could generate around £221m:

Rasmus Hojlund (£40m)

Alejandro Garnacho (£55m)

Marcus Rashford (£40m)

Antony (£32m)

Jadon Sancho (£25m)

Casemiro (£15m)

Tyrell Malacia (£8m)

Altay Bayindir (£6m)

In addition to those fees, players such as Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen, and Tom Heaton are expected to leave on free transfers.

Thus, contributing to an estimated £86.5m in annual wage savings.

That gives a clearer financial picture:

£221m in transfer income

£86.5m in wage savings

£95m in pure profit boosting PSR capacity

It doesn’t mean United will take this route.

Selling Garnacho or Rashford could come with serious fan backlash.

Although, it does suggest the club could afford a heavy summer outlay with the right moves.

If INEOS are to rebuild the squad under Amorim or a new manager, this strategy may be key to financing it.

Man Utd could technically spend £400m+ this summer if they got £95m for Garnacho + Rashford.

Let me explain:

Garnacho (£55m) & Rashford (£40m) are academy products, so their sales = pure profit under PSR. That’s £95m pure profit instantly boosting the books.
