Manchester United’s Europa League final ended in bitter disappointment on Wednesday night, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao.

The result has put manager Ruben Amorim under growing pressure.

Fans and pundits are questioning whether he is the right man to lead the rebuild under INEOS.

Missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification is a serious blow.

Not just in terms of prestige and future recruitment, but also financially.

United now face another summer of financial challenges, with debt mounting and previous investments still being paid off.

And to compound matters, the club are also set to lose a chunk of their Europa League final payday – due to a clause in the deal that brought Mason Mount from Chelsea.

Manchester United to give Chelsea £3.5m due to agreement in Mason Mount deal

As revealed by TopSkillSportUK on X, Manchester United will be forced to pay Chelsea £3.5 million as part of a clause in Mount’s transfer contract that is triggered by European final appearances.

United earned around £5.5 million for reaching and playing in the Europa League final.

However, a significant portion of that sum will now head straight to Stamford Bridge.

Mount joined United in 2023 for an initial £55 million, with a further £5 million in performance-related add-ons.

It included payments tied to appearances in European finals and success in major competitions.

The England midfielder’s deal was the product of prolonged negotiations, with Chelsea initially demanding £70 million.

The final agreement allowed the Blues to benefit from Mount’s success at Old Trafford through conditional bonuses.

For United, this latest financial obligation emphasies the knock-on effects of last summer’s deals.

Losing the final was painful enough – but handing over millions to a domestic rival makes it sting even more.

It’s another layer of frustration as the club look to regroup and plan for a vital transfer window under Amorim.

That is if he remains in charge.

For Chelsea, though, it represents a shrewd bit of business, ensuring they continue to profit from a player they no longer have on the books.
