Alan Shearer snubs 14-goal Liverpool target in favour of Alexis Mac Allister as Team of the Season named

Alan Shearer has announced his Premier League team of the season, with multiple Liverpool players featuring thanks to their title-winning campaign.

Alisson and Virgil van Dijk get the nod at the back after helping the Reds concede just 40 top-flight goals, the second fewest in the league this season.

It is no surprise to see Mohamed Salah also make the cut, with Arne Slot selected to manage the team as well.

Lastly, in midfield, Shearer included Alexis Mac Allister after the Argentine’s strong form this term.

By including Mac Allister, however, the Newcastle legend excluded another excellent Premier League midfielder, one that the Reds have been linked with heading into the summer.

Alexis Mac Allister pips Morgan Rogers to make Alan Shearer’s team of the season

Liverpool’s story this season is one of the best to have emerged from the Premier League.

However, the fact that Aston Villa managed to get into the latter stages of the Champions League and have qualified for Europe next season isn’t something that should be brushed over.

Indeed, Morgan Rogers has been a vital part of his team’s campaign, with 14-goal contributions across all competitions.

Although the England international’s omission is somewhat surprising, Shearer outlined why he believed Mac Allister deserved the nod over the rumoured Liverpool transfer target.

“He has made great strides under Arne Slot, hardly missing a match, and is the engine that has powered the champions,” Shearer said to the Premier League website.

“His dominance in midfield is a big reason why Liverpool have been so good. He nudges out the excellent Morgan Rogers.”

Liverpool could go all in for Morgan Rogers in the summer transfer window

The 2025-26 transfer window is gearing up to be a rather busy one for Slot and co.

Liverpool have already got Jeremie Frimpong on his way to Anfield, with others such as Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz also being heavily linked with a move to the Reds.

The latter of the three is arguably the most interesting of the named targets, with Aston Villa’s Rogers fulfilling a similar role to the young German.

Wirtz is a hot topic in the world of football at the moment, and with other massive European clubs such as Bayern Munich and Manchester City being linked with a transfer, Rogers could be the better option for Slot.

Champions League 12 4 3

The 2024-25 season of Morgan Rogers in numbers.

As the table above shows, Rogers has already proven that he can do it in the Premier League, and his versatility in attack is also a major selling point.

A move for the young Englishman wouldn’t come cheap, but if it can be pulled off, Liverpool would be in a far better place next term.
