LeBron James, 40, holds a $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 NBA season. Following the Los Angeles Lakers' first-round playoff exit to the Minnesota Timberwolves, James has not publicly announced whether he will exercise the option or enter free agency, with the deadline to decide set for June 29.
James, who recently ranked sixth in MVP votes as announced by the NBA on Wednesday, finished the season with 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists, while playing 70 games. However, the four-time MVP remains undecided about his future with the Lakers, leaving many to question whether he plans to return for another season or draw the curtains on his illustrious career.

Amid this uncertainty, James might be on his way to scoring a major achievement off the court. On Wednesday it was reported by NBC4 Columbus that Ohio State University has plans to award James an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree. The university's Board of Trustees was scheduled to vote on the matter during their meeting on Wednesday.
The proposed degree recognizes James's contributions beyond basketball, particularly his philanthropic efforts in Akron, Ohio. Through the LeBron James Family Foundation and initiatives like the I PROMISE Program, James has worked to provide educational opportunities and support to underprivileged children and families.
Fans have been reacting to this major news.
"Make him the Steph Curry of Davidson," said one. "GM of basketball operations at tOSU. Program needs it."
"Gonna have to veto this since Bryce James is going to play at Arizona," joked one.
"special man just a kid from akron," said another.
"The Goat," one added.
If approved, James would join a distinguished group of individuals who have received honorary degrees from Ohio State, including former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, golfer Jack Nicklaus, astronaut Neil Armstrong, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
