Tottenham dominate Europa League Team of the Season with Man Utd duo included

Tottenham's victory in the Europa League final over Manchester United has earned them four players in the official team of the tournament from UEFA, with two United players included

Tottenham’s victory in the Europa League final has been recognised in UEFA’s official team of the tournament. Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao on Wednesday night to secure their first trophy since 2008 and to vindicate under-pressure manager Ange Postecoglou.

Brennan Johnson’s scrappy goal just before half-time was enough for Spurs to end their 17-year wait for a major trophy and ensure United ended their miserable season on a new low. United dominated the ball but could not break down a determined low block from Spurs.

When they did fashion chances, they found Guglielmo Vicario in decent form, with the goalkeeper keeping out efforts from Alejandro Garnacho and Luke Shaw. Postecoglou is known for implementing an expansive playing style, but he took a much more pragmatic approach in the San Mames and was rewarded with his customary trophy in his second season.

Tottenham’s players were seen dancing with joy and sharing the moment with their supporters – and four of them have now been given another honour. UEFA have announced their team of the Europa League and Spurs’ impressive rear guard in the final has been recognised.

Spurs kept six clean sheets during the competition and Vicario has been named the best keeper in the competition. Right-back Pedro Porro was the team’s biggest threat against United, swinging in lots of good crosses, while he dealt well with Mason Mount and Garnacho in defence.

He is joined in the team of the tournament by captain-for-the-night Cristian Romero, who has the extra honour of being the player of the tournament. The combative Argentine was in the thick of things in Bilbao, battling with Harry Maguire in the closing stages.

Finally, the Spurs contingent is completed by striker Dominic Solanke, who worked tirelessly up front in the final. He finished the competition with five goals and four assists in 13 appearances, justifying the club-record £65million Spurs paid Bournemouth for his services.

It won’t come as any consolation to them right now, but United’s defeated finalists have two inclusions in the form of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. The duo formed United’s midfield against Spurs, and although they came up short, they were the most consistent performers in the rest of the tournament.

Frankfurt defender Robin Koch, Bodo/Glimt pair Fredrik Andre Bjorkan and Patrick Berg, Lyon star Rayan Cherki and Athletic Club’s Nico Williams complete the line-up. Cherki scored in both games against United and has been linked with a summer transfer.

The Lyon forward is reportedly being eyed by five Premier League clubs after racking up 12 goals and 20 assists in 44 appearances in all competitions. Meanwhile, Williams is a long-term target of Arsenal.
