Jeremy Sochan is working out all the kinks in his game that fans have been clamoring about since his arrival. He [spoke in an interview](https://ftw.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2025/05/21/jeremy-sochan-san-antonio-spurs-victor-wembanyama-gregg-popovich-mitch-johnson-interview/83747311007/) with sports publication, For The Win, at the NBA Rising Stars Invitational Philippines Qualifiers in Metro Manila. The Polish star was a participant and shared some encouraging information about his training regimen this offseason.
"I want to improve my whole game. I’m working on my shot. I’m working on improving my finishing even more and my ball handling, different reads, attacking different types of big men... I’m super motivated. I have something to prove. I’m working on my body and conditioning." - Sochan
Recently, video emerged of Sochan working on his threes. His [form looked much different](https://airalamo.com/pleasantly-surprising-jeremy-sochan-update-change-everything-spurs) from the disjointed jumper we've seen in his first three seasons. It was much smoother and looked as if he had completely removed a hitch that would make consistent shooting difficult for anyone. If his hard work translates onto the court, Sochan's value skyrockets.
Sochan can't rely on his hustle to make himself untouchable
-----------------------------------------------------------
I'm using the term "untouchable' loosely here, because nobody on that roster has that status except Victor Wembanyama. However, the Polish Prince could put himself in the very next tier, which could be described as the "I'd really rather not" group."
Right now, Stephon Castle and De'Aaron Fox are the only ones in that group. I'm higher on Sochan than many other fans I've had conversations with, and put him in the tier directly below that one, which is the "I'd prefer not to, but I'd do it for the right deal" group. His detractors seem to want him gone no matter what, and that's a silly stance to take, considering how important he is to the team's defense.
San Antonio needs wings with long arms who can defend guys like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, and the like, who aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I refuse to devalue the importance of a defender who can stand up to talent like that. You could always not have an amazing defender and allow those guys to drop 40 every time they pull up, but I don't think that's conducive to beating those teams.
But the offensive challenges are real, so the fact that he's taking his quest to improve so seriously is monumental. Turning himself into a legitimate threat from outside increases the minutes he can play next to Wembanyama. We want them on the floor together to stifle offenses as their chemistry grows.
The nugget about improving his finishing can't be undersold in its importance, either. He gets many drives to the basket with one defender to beat. It's often a big man because teams will put smaller guys on Wembanyama while he's outside to keep their rim protector near the basket.
If Sochan can make himself a more dynamic finisher in those scenarios, along with improving his shot, he becomes the perfect player for the Spurs. All his doubters will have to eat crow for dismissing the possibility of a player improving before he reached the age of 23, which is impossibly silly when you say it out loud.
