This is cause for celebration for himself, his team, and the city that loves him.
According to SportsCenter, Oklahoma City mayor David Holt has declared Thursday, May 22, 2025 as “Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Day.”

This is perfect timing since many OKC residents will be in attendance on Thursday as the Thunder welcome the Minnesota Timberwolves for Game 2.
The Thunder already hold a 1-0 lead, and they are hoping to push that to 2-0.
Game 1 was a strong one for Gilgeous-Alexander, who put up 31 points, five rebounds, and nine assists.
It was another great showing from the young star and further confirmation of his MVP status.
Gilgeous-Alexander has been the frontrunner for MVP all season long, so this prize isn’t that surprising.
His team has also been frontrunners to win the West, so their success in the playoffs so far isn’t shocking either.
Gilgeous-Alexander is very proud of his accomplishment and is happy to bring such joy to the city that has supported him through thick and thin.
But his goal wasn’t just to be named MVP this year; he also wants to be a champion.
He has never been closer to that dream.
The Timberwolves are desperate for a win, and they would like nothing more than to ruin Gilgeous-Alexander’s big day on Thursday.
For a number of reasons, Game 2 will be a must-watch match for all NBA fans.
