The fallout from Manchester United’s Europa League final defeat continues to intensify, both on and off the pitch.
Wednesday night’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao capped off a dismal campaign and ensured United will not play in any European competition next season.
It’s a result that has not only increased the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim but also exposed the club to huge financial losses.
Manchester United to miss out on £140m following Europe League final loss
According to The Telegraph, United stand to miss out on approximately £140 million following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.
This figure combines multiple income streams they’ve now lost out on – and it will have significant implications on their summer business.
England’s four Champions League sides each earned an average of £79 million in UEFA payments this season.
That’s excluding gate receipts which alone could have brought United a further £22 million.
On top of that, the club are expected to receive around £25 million less in Premier League merit payments compared to last season.
And they have activated a £10 million penalty clause in their Adidas kit deal for missing out on the Champions League.
While their post-season tour of Asia is set to bring in £8 million, that figure only slightly softens the overall blow.

As a result, the pressure to sell players and raise funds has drastically increased.
United are now expected to take an ultra-flexible approach to the transfer window, with multiple high-profile sales on the table.
Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap and Wolves attacker Matheus Cunha remain targets, with both having release clauses of £30 million and £62.5 million respectively.
To fund these deals, United are hoping to bring in around £90 million by offloading Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony.
While the future of Alejandro Garnacho is now even more uncertain after he was surprisingly benched in Bilbao.
With no European income and significant commercial penalties kicking in, United are preparing for one of their most high-stakes transfer windows in recent memory.
