The Indianapolis Colts made a heartbreaking announcement on Wednesday. Jim Irsay, the longtime owner of the team, passed away in his sleep at the age of 65.
Irsay has been one of the most enthusiastic owners in professional sports. His love for the Colts was obvious and his love for his players both current and past was also clear.
While his health had been declining, his death was shocking.
Following the news of Irsay's passing, former Indianapolis head coach Tony Dungy has spoken out and sent a heartfelt message about his old boss.
"When I got the news last night that Jim Irsay had passed away in his sleep it was devastating to me," Dungy wrote. "The Bible says in many places that tomorrow is not promised to us but I wasn't ready for this. Jim was one of the kindest, most compassionate people I have ever known. He was awesome to me and my family. He was a blessing to his players and staff. But more than that he had a heart for people and for the city of Indianapolis. He loved people and did so many things for others-more things than you could imagine. I miss him already. He was a special man and I couldn't have worked for a better owner."

Clearly, Irsay had a major impact on Dungy's life and his career in the NFL. The sadness from the former head coach is something that other players have expressed.
Reggie Wayne, a former star wide receiver for the Colts and a current coach, also responded to the news of Irsay's death.
"This hurts my soul," Wayne posted on X.
Irsay has been the owner of the franchise since 1997 when his father passed away. Before becoming the owner of the team, Irsay was also their general manager.

With Irsay now gone, his daughter, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, is expected to take over from her father. How this will impact the franchise as a whole remains to be seen.
Back in 2007, Irsay was able to be a part of a Super Bowl-winning team. Led by Peyton Manning, Indianapolis defeated the Chicago Bears by a final score of 29-17 in that game.
Our prayers are with the Irsay family and all of the people he touched. Dungy and Wayne's messages are just more signs of the impact that he had throughout his life and career.
