I'm thinking about possible Liverpool stay with my heart, not my head

Liverpool's season is at an end this weekend when the champions welcome FA Cup winners Crystal Palace to Anfield. The reward for Arne Slot and his side awaits after the conclusion of the match, when captain Virgil van Dijk will get his hands on the Premier League trophy.

He and his team-mates will then parade that trophy around Merseyside on Monday as the club celebrates its 20th league championship.

And then thoughts will turn to the summer transfer window and the strengthening of Slot's squad.

James Noble (Worcestershire, @james_noble98) - Encouraging contributions from trio

Punctuated by anniversaries of Jurgen Klopp’s wholesome farewell, title near-misses and the Miracle of Istanbul, this is one of those weeks that offers reminders of the broader journey. So many highs and lows, so many experiences, have built towards making this upcoming long weekend one to live to the full.

Liverpool lifting the Premier League trophy at a full Anfield, and parading it around the city, is something we’ve dreamed of for so long. Crystal Palace, following their own historic FA Cup triumph, will likely reinforce the upbeat mood and ought to offer a good test.

As well as providing another opportunity to appreciate the champions – that away end looked and sounded wonderful – Monday’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion brought several tweaks to roles and personnel, which will hopefully offer long-term benefits.

There were certainly sprinklings of promise and insight. Federico Chiesa, Jarell Quansah and Harvey Elliott each made encouraging contributions, while the value offered by absent regulars was also highlighted.

There’ll likely be plenty of moving parts impacting players’ futures this summer. Notable turnover in the squad wouldn’t be surprising, and may be healthy, but any who do depart will have each played a valuable role – whether in the foreground or background – in a 2024/25 campaign that we’re set to celebrate in style in the coming days.

Andrew Cullen (Widnes, @brothersred5) - I'd like Elliott to stay

The time to be officially crowned champions is upon us. The coveted prize is in sight and touching distance. The roar that will rise when Virgil van Dijk lifts our crown will send seismic waves across the country. The best team in the land is back, and we are here to stay.

There have been some grumbles in the media about Liverpool’s performances since being confirmed champions, but my response is, who cares. The key metric in the history books is who lifted the crown, not how it was lifted.

After this weekend’s celebrations, talk will turn to the summer. Much of the focus has been on who will we bring in, rather than who will move on (with one notable exception). Some of our fringe players have been given opportunities in the last couple of weeks to shine, but their performances have been bleak.

It would be a surprise to me if Darwin Nunez pulled on a Liverpool shirt next season. There are also question marks on Kostas Tsimikas, Federico Chiesa, and, dare I say, Harvey Elliott.

Elliott is unquestionably a talented player, but I struggle to see how he will break into the Liverpool midfield next year, and I equally struggle to see how he fits into a front three. Those positions demand pace and power, attributes that Elliott does not possess.

I would like to keep Elliott as a squad player, but I am thinking with my heart, rather than my head.

As the sun sets on a glorious season, Liverpool fans on Sunday will not go gentle into that good night.

Rhys Buchanan (Aigburth, @Rhys_Buchanan) - Elliott and Chiesa impressed

Although there were a few green shoots following on from the Brighton game on Monday evening, I don’t think any fringe players would have truly managed to catch the manager's eye, but considering their overall lack of regular game time, it would be harsh to expect too much from the likes of Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa, who were both offered a rare start in the side.

I thought both looked positive and got into some good positions going forward with Elliott even getting his goal. The thing that has impressed me the most about both names respectively this season is their attitude and positivity from the sidelines.

As players incredibly proud to be pulling on the Red shirt and desperate to make an impact, when they step onto the pitch you’re just willing them to perform and do well.

Alongside the likes of Jarell Quansah, who has also struggled for minutes this year, I wouldn’t be in a hurry to move any of these players on unless the right offer comes in, but would rather add to the squad and look to go the distance on all fronts.

Hopefully there's slightly less experimentation come Sunday and we can sign-off the campaign with the statement win we all deserve.
