One of the best Maryland quarterbacks ever is continuing his professional career overseas.
Taulia Tagovailoa, the Big Ten's all-time leading passer, has signed with the Hamburg Sea Devils in Germany of the European League of Football (ELF), the team announced on social media Thursday.
"I am really excited for this opportunity to play football for the Hamburg Sea Devils," Tagovailoa said in the post. "I look forward to competing with the best players in Europe and bringing everything I have to the team."
Tagovailoa fills the role of former Florida quarterback Micah Leon, who suffered an injury in their season-opening 13-12 win over the Madrid Bravos last Saturday. The official ELF release said Tagovailoa is the Sea Devils' new starting quarterback.
Other Americans listed on Hamburg's roster include defensive back Nazir Streater (Indiana University of Pennsylvania), wide receiver Terryon Robinson (West Carolina) and defensive lineman Kyle Kitchens (Catawba).
The ELF played its first season in 2021 and has 16 teams playing this season. Hamburg lost in the ELF Championship Games in both 2021 and 2022.
Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, went unselected in the 2025 NFL Draft. He attended NFL rookie minicamps for both the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals but never made it to training camp.
He signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL in June 2024. He played eight games for Hamilton, which went 7-11 and did not qualify for the playoffs. He completed his only pass for six yards and ran for 10 yards and a touchdown on three carries.
After transferring from Alabama, Tagovailoa was Maryland's starter for four seasons. His 11,256 passing yards and 67.1% completion percentage are both tops in Big Ten history. He owns virtually every Maryland program passing record, including career and single season passing yards, career and single season completions, career and single season completion percentage and career and single season 300-yard passing games.
The Terps won three bowl games in a row with Tagovailoa at the helm, the only time that has been accomplished in program history. After his fourth season at Maryland, Tagovailoa entered the transfer portal with hopes of gaining another year of eligibility, which he ultimately did not earn.
