We wrap up the campaign with a trip to Southampton on Sunday, looking to add another memorable away day to the impressive collection our supporters have experienced in 2024/25.
Due to their relegation, we’re not scheduled to face the Saints again next season, meaning our trips to St Mary’s will continue to be fairly infrequent. However, there have been plenty of memorable meetings with the south-coast club at their current home and their old stomping ground, The Dell.
Here are five of our best to enjoy all over again:
**September 28, 1991**
**Southampton 0-4 Arsenal**
Five days after becoming our club record signing, Ian Wright continued to make an impression on his new supporters by following up a debut strike at Leicester City in the League Cup with a hat-trick on his First Division bow. It was his shot that led to David Rocastle netting our opener on 39 minutes, and two minutes into the second half the £2.5 million man drilled in his first of the afternoon.
That was quickly doubled when Wright again found himself behind the Saints’ backline and slotted past Tim Flowers, and his dream day was complete on 73 minutes when he gleefully thrashed home the rebound after Alan Smith saw an effort saved by the Saints stopper.
**March 19, 1994**
**Southampton 0-4 Arsenal**
Two seasons later, Wright added another matchball to his collection in another convincing win at The Dell. Having bagged three at Ipswich Town in our previous game, red-hot Wrighty got the scoring underway again on 12 minutes with a diving header before blasting in a brilliant volley on the half-hour mark.
When Ken Monkou brought down Anders Limpar on 69 minutes, that allowed Wright to hit another hat-trick from 12 yards when he dispatched the penalty past Dave Beasant, and with five minutes to go, Kevin Campbell got in on the act when he netted on the turn to wrap up a fine afternoon’s work.
**August 23, 1997**
**Southampton 1-3 Arsenal**
Southampton were left feeling double Dutch early in our Double-winning campaign as our new-look side showed its capabilities by netting three incredible goals. Marc Overmars grabbed his first for the Gunners on 20 minutes when he wriggled past two defenders to score, but the lead was quickly snuffed out when Neil Maddison pulled the host level.
But after the break, Dennis Bergkamp came to the fore. On 57 minutes, he deftly took the ball out of the sky, brought it to the edge of the area and whipped it past Paul Jones to net a sensational strike, and with 11 to play he wrestled past Francis Benali before hammering a shot into the top corner to seal the points for Arsene Wenger’s team.
**September 18, 1999**
**Southampton 0-1 Arsenal**
A single-goal success against the Saints wouldn’t normally make any lists of epic Arsenal games, but this match would become hugely poignant as the years went on. Thierry Henry went into this clash having not scored in his first eight appearances following his move from Juventus, and began it on the bench with Nwankwo Kanu starting in attack.
The Nigerian would miss a couple of golden chances before being swapped for Henry, whose frustration continued when Jones thwarted him when they went one-on-one. But on 79 minutes, he collected a Tony Adams pass, held off Marco Almeida and curled in an unstoppable shot to celebrate the first of a record haul of 228 goals.
**January 28, 2017**
**Southampton 0-5 Arsenal**
The sides were paired together in the fourth round of the FA Cup but we breezed past the Saints en route to our record-breaking 13th triumph. Danny Welbeck marked his return after a long injury lay-off by netting twice in the opening 22 minutes, and then turned provider to set up Theo Walcott to put the tie to bed 10 minutes before half-time.
The former Saint then doubled his tally midway through the second 45 to continue our dominance, and with six minutes to play Alexis Sanchez unselfishly teed up Walcott to slide home this third of the night and continue the tradition of Arsenal hat-tricks at Southampton.
**January 26, 2021**
**Southampton 1-3 Arsenal**
Three days after the Saints knocked us out of the FA Cup, we gained revenge in the Premier League with a teenage Bukayo Saka starring. We had to do it the hard way as we fell behind just three minutes in when Stuart Armstrong blasted in after a corner, but Nicolas Pepe quickly and coolly got us back level.
Six minutes before the break Saka then beat goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to the ball and slid it into an empty net to turn things around, and on 73 minutes the young winger’s centre was bundled in by Alexandre Lacazette to secure a fifth league win in six, as Mikel Arteta’s side began to show some promise after a tough start to the season.
