Aston Villa star Emiliano Martínez could become the most expensive goalkeeper of all time this summer.

Unai Emery will want to keep hold of his big-name stars this summer, especially as his side still have a chance to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

However, Aston Villa’s financial struggles mean a high-profile player needs to be sold.

Several players could bring in big fees, such as Ollie Watkins or Morgan Rogers. However, it appears the fee for exit-linked shot-stopper Martínez would be a record-breaking one.

Manchester United make offer to sign Martínez from Aston Villa

Martínez has been linked with a move away from Aston Villa this summer, with the 32-year-old recently appearing to wave goodbye to Villa Park after the Villans beat Tottenham 2-0 in the Premier League on Friday (16 May).

However, ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes if any club are going to sign Martínez this summer, they’ll need to pay a record fee for a goalkeeper.

“Martínez is under contract at Aston Villa,” King said.

“He plays regularly, which has kept his profile high. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, maybe the best.

“Therefore, I think if he leaves this summer, it will be a record transfer fee for a goalkeeper.”

Aston Villa could struggle to replace Martínez

If Martínez does leave Aston Villa, replacing him won’t be easy.

The Argentinian has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in world football since joining Villa, and it is no surprise that his transfer fee would be a hefty one, especially as he still has four years on his contract.

Emery’s side have been linked with Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher [The Sun], who would be an interesting replacement. However, should Martínez leave, whoever comes in to replace him will have some big shoes to fill in the West Midlands.
