Newcastle United will not embark on a post-season tour this summer, opting instead for a more carefully structured 2025 pre-season as they prepare for their return to European competition next campaign.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, there will be no repeat of the 2024 trip to Australia, which many inside the club viewed as poorly timed and financially underwhelming.
International players will join their national teams after the season concludes, while the rest of the squad will go on immediate holiday, according to Waugh.
Newcastle will kick off their pre-season in early July at NUFC’s training base before the group heads to Austria for a training camp, with the Under-21s training nearby to allow better alignment and player movement between squads.
Newcastle will then travel to East Asia, continuing their commercial expansion while maintaining footballing standards. The club will play Arsenal in Singapore and face Tottenham and a local team in South Korea.
A domestic friendly against Celtic in Glasgow has already been scheduled, with further behind-closed-doors matches planned before the season begins, as it’s been the case in the past few years.
Similarly, Newcastle will once again host a double-header at St James’ Park on the final weekend before the campaign opens in early August.
This summer’s schedule, according to Waugh’s information, has been developed with more cohesion in mind, as new sporting director Paul Mitchell and performance director James Bunce—both of whom were not in place last year—have played key roles.
Their previous Champions League experience while at other clubs has helped design a schedule that balances competitive preparation with commercial obligations, although it’s yet to be seen if it works for the near-Euro-newbie Magpies or not.
