Manchester United went ahead with a club barbecue on Thursday night despite their Europa League final defeat by Tottenham.

United have endured a dismal season, losing 18 of their 37 Premier League games to languish in 16th place.

They had to chance to rescue the campaign in Bilbao on Wednesday, but Ruben Amorim's side put in a dreadful performance to lose 1-0 to Spurs.

The defeat could have significant consequences for United's future, with Mail Sport reporting on Thursday how the club's share price plummeted by £160million in the aftermath of the final, while they are also set to miss out on a windfall of more than £100m by failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Nevertheless, despite the brutal defeat, United proceeded to host an end-of-season club barbecue at their Carrington training ground last night.

It had previously been revealed that if United did win the final, they would commemorate the victory with a low-key celebration like that rather than an open-top bus parade akin to the one Spurs are now planning on Friday.

Despite the defeat, United still made the decision to proceed with the barbecue as planned

This was partly due to scheduling issues, with the Red Devils facing Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, just four days after the final.

They then head straight off into post-season tour to Asia, with the squad set to fly in the aftermath of the Villa game.

United play a game in Kuala Lumpur on May 28, before another match comes in Hong Hong on May 30 - and several of their squad will then head straight off on international duty.

And Mail Sport understands the barbecue went ahead because it was mainly for staff, although some players did still choose to attend.

United viewed the festivities as an opportunity for staff and their families to get together following what has been a tough season.

United's decision to not hold an open-top bus parade also comes after they didn't do one when they won the Europa League in 2017, while there were no plans to do so if they had beaten Villarreal in the 2021 final.

Meanwhile, speaking after the final, a downbeat Ruben Amorim had opened up on his devastation at the result, before he revealed he is prepared to leaveUnited without a penny in compensation if owners and fans no longer believe he can turn the club around.

When asked what he can say to supporters to give them hope that his methods - which he is refusing to compromise on in any way - can work in the long term, he made a stunning admission on his future.

Ruben Amorim revealed he was prepared to walk away without compensation after the final

'I have nothing to show to the fans, so in this moment it is a little bit of faith (that is required),' he said.

'Let's see (on the future). Like I said before, I am always open.

'If the board and fans feel that I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation, but I will not quit.

'I am really confident on my job and as you see I will not change nothing in the way I do things.'

United could still drop to 17th in the table on Sunday's final day, although if they win against Villa and results go their way, Amorim's side could rise to as high as 14th.
