Angel Gomes is set to be the subject of an “open race” this summer and West Ham United have already tabled an offer to him, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about Gomes’ potential return to the Premier League.

Gomes has announced that he’ll leave Lille at the end of the season and already has a number of English clubs keen on signing him this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and West Ham all in pursuit.

Now, sources have told Football Insider that West Ham have already made multiple offers which have been turned down by Gomes, but Graham Potter hasn’t given up on his pursuit of the midfielder.

Football Insider also revealed in March that Tottenham were “closing in” on Gomes ahead of his exit from Lille, but with West Ham’s interest concrete, the England midfielder’s future remains up in the air.

Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said that Gomes will have no shortage of options in the Premier League once the transfer window opens, with West Ham still hopeful they can get a deal done.

“It’ll be an open race for Angel Gomes – I think he’ll be one of the most sought after free agents in this upcoming summer transfer window”, he told Football Insider.

“He has confirmed he will leave Lille at the end of the season when his contract expires. He’s had a lot of interest from Premier League clubs before.

“Spurs have shown interest, Aston Villa; West Ham have made offers to him which he’s turned down, but they’re still at the table trying to persuade the player to move to East London.

“[Gomes’] stock has really risen in the last year or so, he’s broken into the England fold and become a regular in that squad.

“I’m sure Gomes right now will be weighing up all options that are available to him.”

West Ham want cut-price Gomes deal to display transfer nous

After they spent north of £120million last summer on a series of players who have limped to a lower mid-table finish in the Premier League, West Ham have to be far more shrewd in the market this time around.

Gomes isn’t the only soon-to-be free agent who could swap Lille for the London Stadium this summer, with Potter also a huge fan of Jonathan David as he looks to finally solve West Ham’s striker problem.

A planned raid of four players from relegated Southampton isn’t likely to go down well with Hammers fans, and Potter can instead make a significant statement by beating two Europe-bound sides to an England international like Gomes.
