Newcastle United will be strong contenders to sign Jamie Gittens this summer if they secure Champions League qualification, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about the race to sign the Borussia Dortmund winger.

Gittens is a long-term target for Chelsea ahead of the transfer window and the Blues see themselves as front-runners to sign him this summer, but Newcastle are also firmly in contention for the 20-year-old.

Sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle could have “as good a chance as anybody” to secure a move for Gittens ahead of Chelsea or Arsenal, but that will hinge on Champions League qualification.

Eddie Howe‘s Magpies sit fourth in the Premier League on 66 points ahead of their final-day clash with Everton, and Champions League football will give them a £100million windfall to buy the likes of Gittens.

Newcastle ‘definitely’ contenders in Gittens transfer chase

Man United’s former chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 20 May that Newcastle have sent scouts to watch Gittens and made contact with his agent, with a Premier League return on the cards.

Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said that while Chelsea seemingly lead the race to seal that Premier League move for Gittens, Newcastle can overtake them if they’re in the Champions League.

“[Newcastle] will definitely have a chance if they do pursue a move for Gittens”, he told Football Insider.

“Chelsea have shown a lot of interest in him as they might be in the market for a new left-sided winger.

“Chelsea probably see themselves maybe as front-runners in this race... Arsenal are interested as well.

“Newcastle, if they can qualify for the Champions League, will feel they have as good a chance as anybody to try and sign him.”

£80m Gittens transfer worth the risk for Newcastle?

Newcastle are ready to prioritise the right flank in this summer’s window if Champions League football is secured, with Anthony Gordon and the in-demand Alexander Isak both certain starters up front when fit.

Gittens will attract a fee of £80m which would be within Chelsea’s budget if they move for the winger, but Newcastle may be hesitant to spend such an amount on a mostly left-sided wideman this summer.

With Brentford’s free-scoring right-winger Bryan Mbeumo possibly available for just £60m, the Magpies may instead elect to go for the more tried-and-tested option to complement a world-class front three.
