Arsenal trio get England nod

Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly have all been called up by Thomas Tuchel for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifier against Andorra and a friendly with Senegal.

Saka returns to the squad having missed the March Interlull as he continued his recovery from hamstring surgery. His last outing for the Three Lions was back in October, when he limped off with a hamstring issue during a 2-1 Nations League defeat to Greece. Six weeks later, he tore the same muscle.

The selections of Rice and Lewis-Skelly come as little surprise given their excellent form for Arsenal since the turn of the year. For the teenager, it’s a chance to build on the two caps he earned earlier this year – a spell that included a goal on his full international debut.

Despite making himself available for selection following a self-imposed exile under Gareth Southgate, Ben White is not included. With the defender still regaining fitness after a knee injury, his omission isn’t unexpected.

Ethan Nwaneri, who was reportedly close to a senior call-up in March, is expected to remain with the under-21s for their European Championship campaign in Slovakia. England face Czechia, Slovenia and Germany in the group stage.

Further down the ranks, goalkeeper Tommy Setford has been included in the under-19 squad for their Euros in Romania, where England will play Norway, Germany and the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, Max Dowman and Jack Porter are already in action with the under-17s. The Young Lions began their European Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium in Albania, and next face Italy and Czechia.

A busy summer for our English contingent, let’s hope they all stay fit before heading off on their holidays.
