Worse than Hojlund: INEOS should axe£120,000p/w Man United flop this summer

Manchester United face a crucial summer of rebuilding after enduring one of the most humiliating campaigns in their storied history.

Several underperforming stars are expected to be shown the door, with Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen poised to depart when their contracts expire in July.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony seem to be sure-shot departures.

Rasmus Hojlund has endured a woeful season and must now be firmly placed on the chopping block.

Yet if there is one player who has been even more disappointing, it is undoubtedly Andre Onana.

The Cameroon international moved to Old Trafford from Inter Milan in a £47 million deal in the summer of 2023, touted as the modern replacement for David de Gea.

Onana was billed as a progressive keeper, lauded for his ball-playing ability and comfort in a high line, everything De Gea supposedly lacked.

However, nearly two years into his stay at the Theatre of Dreams, he has offered little of the sweeping security expected and even less reliability between the posts.

Time and again, Onana has remained glued to his line during corners, lacking the authority to claim crosses or clear danger when it arises.

He has made several blunders in his brief United spell and was the biggest reason the club were knocked out of the Champions League group stage last season.

His performance in the Europa League final was the Last straw.

Spurs managed just one shot on target, yet somehow, they scored, thanks to a bizarre moment from Onana.

Rather than holding his ground, Onana leapt into the air as Brennan Johnson’s tame touch trickled under him, a baffling misread that gifted Spurs the trophy.

No matter how much United may improve their attack, a fragile presence in goal will keep sabotaging their progress.

Even worse, his understudy Altay Bayindir has failed to impress, offering no real competition or confidence when called upon.

Onana has failed to justify his £120,000-a-week paycheck.

INEOS must prioritise signing a world-class goalkeeper, someone who commands the box and could actually make some game-changing saves.
