Paul Mitchell eyeing £20m Norwegian – but Newcastle face ‘serious competition’ – Report

Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell is thought to be battling for another talented prospect.

A busy summer is expected for Mitchell and head of recruitment Steve Nickson as we aim to add multiple first team ready additions, although it seems future stars and ‘project’ players will also be targeted once again.

The latest talent he has his eyes on, this time hailing from the Danish Superliga, is hoped to follow the likes of Vakhtang Salia and Antonio Cordero through the doors at Darsley Park – but it seems we’re facing plenty of competition from France. Italy and the Netherlands.

Newcastle are closely watching Norwegian wonderkid Sindre Walle Egeli but will face ‘serious competition’ from across the continent for his signature, according to the Chronicle’s Lee Ryder.

French side Lille, from whom we signed Sven Botman, have already submitted an enquiry for the 18-year-old right-winger who has nine goals and eight assists in 32 outings this season.

Current side Nordsjaelland turned down an offer of £12m from Feyenoord in January, and it may take up to £20m for the Danish side to part with the Norway international this summer, reports Ryder.

Atalanta are also believed to be interested in the winger, with stiff competition expected for the services of the rising star tipped to seal a move to one of Europe’s top leagues this summer.

While Newcastle will need to spend big on some key players to ensure we can compete on multiple fronts next season, it makes sense that we are still actively recruiting hidden gems.

Deals such as a £7m move for Yankuba Minteh (also signed from the Danish top flight) made us a quick profit and may be key in the PSR era.

Whether we look to sign cheap and sell for profit or seeing them become future first team stars without breaking the bank, Mitchell would be wise to follow Brighton’s model regarding project players.

Our right-flank needs reinforcements, with Jacob Murphy currently our only out-and-out right-winger, so we may be eyeing the young Scandinavian alongside a proven option to future-proof that side of our attack.
