Arsenal are among the clubs interested in bringing former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez back to the Premier League, according to reports in Spain.

TV programme El Chiringuito de Jugones claim the Gunners, Liverpool and other English teams are hoping to persuade the World Cup winner to return just a year after leaving these shores for Atletico Madrid.

The La Liga side paid £81.5m to secure Alvarez’s services and, while some fans on X are sceptical about whether the striker is on the market, others are keen for Mikel Arteta’s side to make an approach:

This is a no brainer but why would they sell? He's literally their best player

Alvarez has had an impressive season in Spain

After a slow start, the Argentinian international has managed to find his feet in recent months at Atletico, scoring 29 goals and providing 6 assists in 53 appearances.

Prizing him away from Spain could prove difficult. In recent days, club president Enrique Cerezo has emphatically stated that Alvarez is going nowhere:

“Julian Alvarez is a player of Atletico de Madrid. He’s very happy here, he is our player and he will remain our player. He was raised at Atletico Madrid and he will die at Atletico Madrid.”

Arsenal are currently prioritising other strikers

While the Gunners would undoubtedly be interested if Alvarez becomes available, the club are currently focused on more realistic options.

The top two candidates are said to be Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. Brighton’s Joao Pedro and Juventus’s Dusan Vlahovic are also reportedly on the shortlist.
