West Ham United have endured a torrid campaign, with the Hammers on course for a forgettable 15th-place finish.

Graham Potter was drafted in as the solution, but has failed to impress after replacing Julen Lopetegui.

Arsenal are another London club who have endured a trying season as they will go trophyless for a fifth successive season.

While their aspirations are different, the Gunners have been criticised for not following in the Irons’ footsteps.

Arsenal hammered for not matching West Ham

For a club of Arsenal’s stature, it is criminal that they have only finished as bridesmaids in European competitions.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

The Gunners have played in four major European finals, including one in the Champions League and one in the Europa League.

However, the North London club were beaten by Barcelona and Chelsea as they fell at the final hurdle.

West Ham, on the other hand, have tasted success in Europe, having won the Europa Conference League in 2022/23 and the Intertoto Cup in 1998/99.

West Ham have two European trophies

Of course, many will argue that the Hammers’ achievements cannot compare, given the stature of those competitions.

As Jason Cundy and Jamie O’Hara discussed Arsenal’s struggles on talkSPORT (23 May, 06:14am), they came to blows.

Cundy said: “Arsenal’s record in Europe is a disgrace. They’re one of the biggest clubs in world football, right, and their record is disgusting. West Ham have a better European record.”

O’Hara interjected: “West Ham? West Ham? Come on.”

Cundy responded: “They’ve won two.”

West Ham have work to do to repeat European success

On this season’s showing, it is hard to imagine the London Stadium club becoming a force again in Europe.

Under David Moyes, the Hammers lifted the Europa Conference League, impressively defeating Fiorentina 2-1 in the final.

However, they have since struggled under Lopetegui and Potter, and the football has made for bleak viewing.

This summer, Potter has the chance to build a squad that must improve on a bottom-half finish, and he must sign well.

The 50-year-old has been linked with a raid of his former club Chelsea, with Axel Disasi among the names under consideration.

Europe feels like a distant dream for Hammers supporters, but they do have two trophies over their rivals Arsenal.
