It seems that FSG and Liverpool have learnt the lesson from 2019/20’s Premier League title triumph, with the club not expected to rest on their laurels this summer.
After a deliberate period of financial restraint during the 2024 summer window – where the Reds made only one permanent signing – the club’s hierarchy appear ready to back Slot.
The sole major acquisition last summer was Federico Chiesa from Juventus for £12.5 million.
Departures of academy graduates Fabio Carvalho (£27.5 million) and Sepp van den Berg (£25 million) offset costs, while veterans Joel Matip and Thiago both retired.
With Champions League revenue, commercial growth, and stadium expansion now bolstering the balance sheet, FSG has reportedly greenlit what the Telegraph describes as “one of Liverpool’s biggest-ever summer transfer budgets.
The impending free transfer departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid has accelerated plans for a right-back overhaul.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, available for €35 million via release clause, has already agreed personal terms and completed a medical with his official announcement the only detail remaining.
And while it’s expected that more signings are brought in, Arne Slot has once again explained that finding players to would raise the level in the squad will be difficult – but asserted that it would be “stupid” not to at least try:
“City will probably strengthen the squad again. If the rumours are correct, Arsenal is planning the same, so it would be stupid if we are not looking at trying to strengthen the squad as well,” he said to the BBC.
“Again, I’ve said it many times, it’s not that easy because this team has already won the league.”
“So to find players that can strengthen us – that might not be that difficult – because there are certain players in the world where I think, ‘if they would come, it would be nice’.”
“But they’re also playing at clubs where they don’t want to leave. So there are not many that can strengthen us, but the few that are out there, we will try to get them.”
“At this moment of time we’re not sure if that’s possible.”
