Coventry City old boy told he'd be 'perfect fit' for Championship club amid Newcastle…

Callum Wilson has been told he would be the perfect fit for a drop down to the Championship, with newly-promoted Wrexham tipped to take the former Coventry City star.

The Newcastle United striker’s future is currently up in the air as his contract at St James’ Park nears its end. The Coventry-born player, who came up through the Sky Blues Academy and made a name for himself under former boss Steven Pressley, was sold by City to Bournemouth for £3m in 2014.

The England international then joined the Magpies in September 2020 for £20million and has since scored 47 Premier League goals in 110 appearances.

However, ongoing back and hamstring issues, coupled with the rise of Alexander Isak, have seen the 33-year-old’s game time reduced this season. Despite making 21 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle this term, he has only managed to score once and started just twice.

Wrexham, under the ownership of Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are now being advised to snap up Wilson following their recent promotion from League One to the Championship. The recommendation comes from ex-Newcastle and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann, who feels Wilson would be a good signing for the Red Dragons.

If Wrexham do choose to pursue him, their success may depend on whether Newcastle can secure one of their primary summer transfer targets. Canadian Jonathan David is understood to be on the club’s wish list, with the cost of a deal likely to exceed £10million in wages and signing-on fees.

The 25-year-old has confirmed he will definitely be departing French team Lille at the close of the season when his own contract expires, and his potential arrival could open the door for Wilson’s exit.

Speaking to BettingLounge.co.uk, Hamann said: “Callum Wilson would absolutely be a great signing for Wrexham. Newcastle will probably improve their squad for next season and it will be even harder to get game time.

“For Wrexham, if they want to get promoted into the Premier League they will probably need to have a Premier League level squad given the quality of the teams at the top of the Championship.

“So they will be looking at Premier League players and we’ve seen teams do back to back promotions from League One to the Premier League in recent years, Wrexham could be a similar story.”

He added: “A player like Callum Wilson with that experience, he will be able to keep the level up in the Championship and teach the young lads, I could see that signing being a success.”
