'Take that responsibility': Thomas Tuchel now explains Newcastle star's snub from England squad

Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento has enjoyed a brilliant season.

Livramento has established himself as one of Newcastle United’s most important players since joining Newcastle United from Southampton in 2023.

Newcastle paid £32million to sign Livramento, who is equally as capable of operating as a left-back as he is in his more natural right-back berth.

The 22-year-old even made his England debut in November 2024, having been rewarded for his fine club form by interim Three Lions boss Lee Carsley. Not long after, Livramento was brilliant in the final as Newcastle won the Carabao Cup.

However, it now seems as if he will have to wait a while for his next senior cap.

Thomas Tuchel explains Tino Livramento snub

Livramento was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for their games in June, when they will play Andorra and Senegal.

Newcastle teammates Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon were selected but there was no place for the defender or in-form Jacob Murphy.

Speaking of his decision to overlook the defender, Tuchel sent what looks like it could be a hammer blow to his chances of making the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The England manager suggested he won’t be part of the set-up for the tournament, hinting that the likes of Livramento, Elliot Anderson, Liam Delap and Jarell Quansah will need to take “responsibility” for the upcoming U21 European Championships later this summer.

That would perhaps suggest he is not in the thinking for the senior side at this stage.

Tuchel on Adam Wharton absence:

"We made Adam train with us [in March]. He was very, very good. There is a concussion protocol going on. Together with Livramento, Quansah, Anderson and Delap, there is a U21 Euros coming up. The intention is they take that responsibility. #CPFC

Tino Livramento stats compared to Kyle Walker

Tuchel does have a wealth of options at right-back, it must be said.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James are established internationals, while Arsenal’s Ben White isn’t even included in the squad.

Kyle Walker, however, is. There’s no doubt the right-back has been an excellent player for England over the years but he has looked a declining force this season.

Walker struggled at Manchester City before joining AC Milan in January. As per WhoScored data, Livramento beat Walker in a number of key defensive metrics in a Premier League context prior to the City star’s departure.

There’s little doubt Walker does offer more experience, but he will be over 35 by the time the World Cup comes around and no longer looks the player of old anyway. Selecting him over Livramento seems strange.
