San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner have both gotten big paydays recently.
Warner had a hilarious response when asked what he thinks the notoriously humble Purdy will buy after landing a huge contract.
The All-Pro linebacker made these comments back in January as the 49ers wrapped up their disappointing 2024 campaign. When asked about Purdy's pending contract situation and what he would do after he secured a big bag, Warner mused, "I think he'll buy a bunch of chains."
Now, Purdy has indeed secured a big bag in the form of a five-year, $265 million contract. In his first press conference after the signing, there was no big gold chain around his neck although he did say he wants to buy a bass fishing boat much to the chagrin of his wife.
A fishing boat seems much more in keeping with Purdy's reputation as a simple, humble guy.
Although it would have been objectively hilarious if Purdy had shown up to his press conference rocking chains, designer sunglasses, and a big fur coat.
Warner could certainly splurge on something, too, after he signed a three-year, $63 million contract extension just a few days after Purdy signed his deal. The veteran does not seem like the flashy type either, and his fashion statements are usually more 49ers-oriented, but he certainly deserves to go reward himself after the career he is putting together.
With both Purdy and Warner locked up for the foreseeable future, San Francisco now has all of the key members of its core on both sides of the ball under contract. That bodes well for the team as the Niners try to go out and redeem all of the heartbreaking losses they have experienced in the playoffs over the past five years.
While Warner and Purdy both got paid what they deserve, they are both team-first guys who just want to win. It is that mindset that makes them both great leaders on the team who are going to be instilling those same values in young players on the 49ers for years to come.
It seems like the culture and morale of the team is strong right now on the heels of these big extensions. Perhaps getting past the hangover of last season is what the team really needed to get back on track and start being the playoff-caliber team we know they are capable of being.
