‘Little bit of sickness’ in Town squad ahead of West Ham clash

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has revealed that there has been ‘a little bit of sickness’ in the squad during the build up to Sunday’s final Premier League clash of the season at home against West Ham United.

Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips will once again be absent due to an Achilles issue, while a late decision will be made on the availability of striker Sammie Szmodics.

And McKenna will also have to make a call on those players that have missed training this week with illness.

The Tractor Boys boss said: “It’s still sort of mixed across the board. Kalvin is a no, he’s seeing a specialist for his issue with his Achilles. He’ll hopefully get that sorted in the off-season.

“Sammie Szmodics is back training with the group but we have to decide on (his) availability and long-term players are still out.

“And there’s a little bit of sickness in the camp so we’ve had a few off and struggling with that. Hopefully we’ll be in a decent position by Sunday.”

And while his side may have been relegated a few weeks ago, McKenna has called on the players to sign off from the top flight in positive fashion.

He added: “It’s really important, no doubt about it. To me there genuinely feels like there’s lots to play for in the last game in many different aspects.

“We can’t guarantee a result at any level of football, certainly not in the Premier League, but we can guarantee the commitment that we give to the performance and do everything to reward the supporters on the day – that’s what we’re going to try to do.”
