Estevao Willian scored an impressive brace in one of his final games for Palmeiras before joining Chelsea this summer. The Brazilan teenager was confirmed as a Blues player nearly 12 months ago but in that official announcement, it was stated he would not join until the following summer once he turned 18.
"Chelsea Football Club has agreed a deal to sign teenage forward Estevao Willian from Palmeiras, with the Brazilian to officially join Chelsea next summer," a club statement from June 2024 read.
"The 17-year-old has already built a strong reputation in South America as one of the most exciting talents around due to his skilful dribbling and electric pace, causing defences plenty of problems in his breakout season in senior football."
The final part of Chelsea's statement has continued to be the case with Estevao scoring 10 goals this season. His latest two strikes both came against Ceara Sporting Club in the Copa da Brasil in the early hours of Friday morning.
Palmeiras won the third round first leg 1-0 last month with Estevao providing the assist before then scoring twice in the second leg. Despite seeing a penalty that he won saved, he tucked home the rebound before doubling his tally in just a few minutes.
A mazy run into the box left defenders backtracking and he then rifled an effort into the roof of the net with his weaker right foot.
Following that impressive performance, Estevao was asked about his impending move to Chelsea. "Feeling of gratitude, because at the same time that I’m leaving here, I’m going to live a dream," he told Brazilian outlet Globo.
"I’m trying to enjoy this place as much as possible, because I’m going to miss it."
As he can officially join Chelsea from the start of next month, Estevao is set to play just another two more times for Palmeiras and it is very likely he will be involved from the off as the Club World Cup is scheduled to kick off in just a few weeks.
Due to Palmeiras's back-three system, he has been deployed as one of the No.10s just behind the striker, and it is clear that is where he would like to play for Chelsea.
"My favourite position is number 10, inside. But I’m comfortable in every position, also on the wing," he told ESPN Brazil.
