Sir Jim Ratcliffe has overseen a series of cost-cutting measures at United
Manchester United officials have told some staff working at the club's Carrington training ground that they are being made redundant, with the news delivered less than 48 hours after defeat in the Europa League final.
Staff in football-facing roles including scouting and medical departments were told on Friday that they would be losing their jobs, with the outcome in jobs connected to first-team affairs deferred until the end of the season.
United sources say the majority of the 200 staff members expected to lose their jobs in the latest round of cuts had already been informed of their at-risk status.
But some football staff were only told of their fate on Friday, with a desire to avoid disruption during the run to the Europa League final and the build-up to Wednesday's final against Tottenham in Bilbao.
With that game now out of the way and just the final Premier League game of the season to come, staff affected in football-facing areas are being informed of their fate, with some told their job roles are being phased out and that they won't be remaining at the club.
The development is another blow to morale at Carrington, with the news delivered so soon after the 1-0 defeat at Spurs which means United miss out on Champions League football next term, leaving a £100million hole in the budget. United have lost more than £370million over the past five years.
The latest redundancies aren't related to the defeat and had been planned as part of the cutback of 150 to 200 jobs. Those redundancies follow on from 250 staff being made redundant a year ago.
United employed around 1,100 people when Ineos took control of the club's football operations in February 2024, but that workforce is now expected to be slashed to around 650 employees. It is part of a series of cost-cutting measures driven by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who attended the final in Bilbao with fellow co-owner Avram Glazer.
Despite losing the game, the club held a barbecue on Thursday night planned for the first-team squad and family members.
