Manchester United may have a clear path to securing Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, if the latest reports are to be believed.

The Sweden international is expected to move on this summer, despite Sporting’s recent Portuguese league title win, with several clubs across Europe reportedly interested. Among them is United, who appointed former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim in November last year.

Arsenal have appeared to be the strongest competition for Gyokeres’ signature, particularly given United’s failure to qualify for any European competition next season.

The Red Devils were narrowly beaten 1–0 by Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao earlier this week, yet another blow in what has been a dismal season for the club.

However, David Ornstein offered an update on Arsenal’s summer transfer plans in his latest Q&A for The Athletic. According to the report, the Gunners are set to choose between Gyokeres and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options.

It remains unclear which of the two Arsenal will prioritise, but should they opt for Sesko, that could pave the way for United to make a clear move for Gyokeres. The striker’s familiarity with Amorim may also help offset the lack of European football, should United firm up their interest.

The Red Devils have also been strongly linked with Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, while Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is another reported target.

However, Chelsea are also said to be monitoring the former Manchester City man, which could complicate United’s pursuit, with Delap expected to be available at a reduced fee this summer following Ipswich’s relegation back to the Championship.

United have just one fixture remaining in the 2024/25 season, a Premier League clash at home to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon. Attention will then swiftly turn to next season and how the club intends to recover from a disappointing campaign, having amassed just 39 points from their 37 league matches so far.
