Gomes has spent the last four years at the Ligue 1 club and has also broken into the Three Lions side under previous boss Gareth Southgate.
As Everton prepare for their final match of the 2024-25 season - another roller coaster ride which was rounded off by those emotional scenes at Goodison Park last weekend - the Blues face a massive re-structuring of the squad in the summer.
One area of the team that will be of special concern to manager David Moyes is the side's engine room.
Moyes could be losing his two key veteran midfielders with both Idrissa Gueye and Abdoulaye Doucoure leaving the club.
Doucoure is certainly going with his contract not being renewed and Gueye's situation looks increasingly similar although there is no confirmation yet of a resolution to his future.
If Gueye does follow the Mali international out of the door at Finch Farm, then it will present both a challenge and an opportunity for Moyes, especially as both have huge Premier League and international experience.
Obviously, the first priority will be to bring in replacements and ensure there is enough strength and depth in the first-team squad.
But it also gives the manager a great chance to re-shape Everton's midfield and bring some different qualities into that engine room.
For most of the last few years the Toffees midfield has been charaterised by graft over creativity with the emphasis on physical and hard-working players, such as Doucoure and Gueye.
While Everton were struggling in the lower reaches of the Premier League and often battling relegation, that was understandable.
Now though, as the club move into the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, ambitions need to match the stunning new arena.
Looking at young, more technically skilled and creative players who can add silk to the steel, which will still be needed, makes sense.
Gomes is certainly a talented young player who has been widely touted as having the potential to become a top class midfielder and could well add that to Everton's side.
However, it appears as though Argentine Charley Alcarez is keen to make his January loan move into a permanent one, and furthermore the Blues would face stiff competition for Gomes' signature.
One of the other clubs mentioned in these rumours is Spurs. The newly crowned Europa League winners are now in a much stronger position with the North Londoners now able to offer new recruits Champions League football.
So, even if Moyes is interested in the young England star it seems very likely if Gomes comes to the Premier League, it will be to one of Everton's rivals.
