The San Francisco 49ers locked up their franchise quarterback Brock Purdy to a lucrative five-year $265 million contract extension. Purdy was asked whether his "nice guy" reputation meant he would take a lower deal, but he shot that down.
Purdy was asked this question at his first press conference following his rich new deal.
His response can be viewed below:
In the snippet, Purdy says, "I don't know if there was a narrative of, 'Brock's gonna take a pay cut because he's a nice guy' or this or that... for me with what I've done and everything, I can hang my hat on the fact that I've had success in this league and I'm capable of leading an organization, all the way to the end, the Super Bowl, I've proven that."
It is interesting to hear Purdy talk in this more confident and open way about himself. In no way does he come off as brash or cocky especially as he also heaped praise on the organization and said he felt very grateful for where the two sides ended up. However, it is clear that he believes in himself and his ability to lead an organization which is exactly what you want from your signal caller.
Purdy does have a reputation for being a nice guy, which is partly due to his humble demeanor but also his baby-face look at the age of 25. Yet, we know that he has a killer instinct as well as evidenced by the intense game face he adopted before a game against the Arizona Cardinals back in 2023.
The guy is an intense competitor who wants to win and definitely hears the noise about himself. He went on KNBR recently and said he believes he is a top-10 quarterback, and he also said that he laughs when he hears the old "system QB" critique.
He is still that humble farmboy he often presents as, but that can belie the true competitor that he is out on the field.
There are already reports out there slighting Purdy by saying teams were not interested in trading for him. The Purdy hate is nothing new, but it will only provide more fuel to the fire for Purdy to go out and prove to everyone that his contract will end up being a bargain.
Purdy definitely is a nice guy even if he does not necessarily want to be thought of that way, but we know the kid can be a stone-cold killer when necessary so let's hope he can keep on proving his doubters wrong over the duration of his contract.
