Viktor Gyokeres has expressed his preference for Lisbon over London amidst rumours of a summer move to Arsenal and Manchester United. The 26-year-old Sporting striker has become one of Europe's most sought-after forwards over the past two seasons.
Since moving to Portugal, Gyokeres has scored an impressive 96 goals in 101 appearances, attracting interest from Premier League heavyweights Arsenal and United. Initially, it was thought that the Red Devils were leading the race to sign the Swedish player due to his close ties with their head coach and former Sporting manager, Ruben Amorim.
However, Arsenal may have emerged as the more appealing option due to their Champions League qualification and positive trajectory compared to the Red Devils. The club's new sporting director, Andrea Berta, is also said to be a big admirer of the forward.
The North London side are still undecided about whether they want the £60million-rated Gyokeres to spearhead their attack next season. Manager Mikel Arteta is also considering Benjamin Sesko.
However, Gyokeres may have just made the decision for them. In an attempt to coax him into revealing his plans ahead of the summer transfer window, Portuguese publication A Bola asked Gyokeres if he prefers London or Lisbon.
He responded: "I prefer Lisbon because I live here now. And yes, I like living here," hinting that he sees his future in the Portuguese capital or perhaps simply playing his cards close to his chest.
The revelation follows claims made by the ex-Coventry City ace's uncle, Chris, that Gyokeres and his family had resolved in a discussion not to pursue a departure this summer.
Donning a Sporting scarf and kit on the very day Gyokeres netted the decisive goal crowning Sporting as champions, Chris exclaimed: "I'm super happy, this is amazing. We were here last year, it's the same spirit, the same people, the same atmosphere. Absolutely fantastic! Beyond words!"
He divulged that the Gyokeres clan had deliberated over Viktor's transfer options during dinner. When questioned about his nephew's affinity with Sporting: "Yes, very much... yesterday at dinner we decided that he has to stay."
As for predictions on whether Gyokeres will remain at the club through the summer, Chris answered: "Yes, we think so."
However, Gyokeres himself has now downplayed his uncle's remarks, indicating he hasn't made any final decisions regarding his club affiliation for next season. He shared about his relatives: "They really like Portugal; I think they want to be here and enjoy the city, the good weather, and all the atmosphere.
"But it's football and that's another thing. We'll see what happens. Yes [I would like to win a third title with Sporting], but we'll see. I don't know what will happen in the summer... Let's see what happens."
