Club have activated Arsenal loanee’s purchase clause

Lazio have already activated their purchase clause for Arsenal loanee Nuno Tavares ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a report from Italy.

Lazio’s decision to sign Nuno Tavares permanently has long felt like a formality, with the Italian club clearly keen to extend the defender’s stay beyond the terms of his loan deal.

But Italian outlet Il Messaggero have now suggested that the deal is already done, with Lazio activating their purchase clause in Tavares’ contract.

The same source adds that Lazio are immediately putting the player on the market, hoping to make a profit on him this summer. But that would be good news for Arsenal, who also hold a sell-on clause.

There’s been some debate on the exact value of Lazio’s buy option for Tavares, with Il Messaggero putting it at just €5m, but Simon Collings of The Standard reporting that it’s €7-8m, and Fabrizio Romano recently claiming it’s as high as €9m.

Conversely, whilst Collings suggested the sell-on clause is in the region of 25%, Il Messaggero write that it’s closer to 40%.

We may have to wait for more certainty on exactly how much money Arsenal will make from the deal (or deals) this summer, but everyone seems to be on the same page that Tavares won’t be returning to north London.

Tavares has played 29 times and provided nine assists for Lazio this season, but he’s had significant problems with injuries.

The left-back first suffered a hamstring injury in November, then an adductor injury in January.

Tavares’ third muscular injury came at the start of March, forcing him to miss a game against Udinese. Though he returned to the pitch the following midweek, he then suffered a setback and missed another Lazio fixture as well as the entire international break.

Once again, Tavares made his comeback on April 6th, only to suffer his third injury in a month. He then played 26 minutes against Bodo/Glimt on April 17th before leaving the field in tears. The 25-year-old made yet another comeback against Inter Milan last Sunday.
